Hacked again!

Posted on January 30th, 2008.

You may have noticed that my blog was down for a day or two. It’s really annoying when that happens, though I hope I’ve solved the problem. However, I guess you can never fully stop this sort of thing from happening. Someone’s going to find a way in somehow.

One particular post seemed to be causing all the hassle on my blog. I removed that particular post using phpMyAdmin and it seems to have cured the problem, at least I hope so.

It’s important to not panic when something like this happens, and it’s definitely better to prepare for something like this, rather than sit and just wait for it to happen.

I suggest that you make regular back-ups of all of the databases on your websites. I was going to do it once a month, but with less than nearly a month between the two times this blog was hacked, I’m going to start backing up weekly. Furthermore, have any custom themes backed up, because you really don’t want to lose them. They take a lot of hard work and money to put together.

Also, update all software regularly and properly. That’s perhaps what happened to me, I uploaded files for Wordpress 2.3.2, but I don’t think I went to the update page and so technically, I was running Wordpress 2.3.1.

Be proactive against hackers, and try to minimize the damage as best you can by following some of the advice I’ve left above. I know I’m certainly going to start backing up regularly.

Oh, so that’s why it’s down. I was surprised when I came and was greeted by some weird error page. Glad that you got your site up again.
