I’m restructuring this blog
I’ve been blogging for about 4 months now, and I’m starting to reap the rewards. Traffic is on the up, and my writing improves with every post. I’m always looking for ways to help my blog grow and so, I’m constantly looking for ways to improve it. That’s why I’ve decided to restructure the way in which I organise and post content.
7 categories for 7 topics
I’ve decided to cut the number of categories down to just 7.
The idea is to try and make things easier to find. Instead of many options, there’s going to be just 7. In addition, having a tonne of categories doesn’t make sense. What’s the point of having categories, if your blog posts overlap 3 or 4 of them? It just looks like you’re trying to fool people into thinking your blog’s got lots of content.
The new categories are…
Content
Content creation is one of my favourite topics. Here you’ll find posts on topics like making your writing more professional, or incorporating video content into your website.
Blogging
Obviously, anything related to blogging is going to go in this category.
Marketing
It was either going to be marketing as a whole, or just SEO.
However, I’ve decided to go with marketing, and why? Because there’s a whole lot more to marketing a site, than just SEO.
Tools
A web developer needs a good set of tools, and that’s what this category’s going to have articles on. Web development tool reviews and news are going to go in here.
Design
What’s a website without a good design? However, it’s not all about good looks on this site. This category will also contain posts on usability and web standards.
Making Money
I’m going to post about making money online in this category.
Random
A blog just wouldn’t be a blog if it wasn’t a bit random. It’s what makes a blog a blog - the quirky interests of its owner.
I’m starting to use tags
Tags are going to be more specific than my categories. They’ll help people dig down deeper into each of the 7 categories shown above.
Also, they’ll come in useful for the related posts plugin which currently isn’t working.
A reorganisation of my posting structure as well
Each of the seven categories represents a day of the week. For example, I’ll post in the Content category on Mondays.
It means that I’ll be able to think of post topics in advance, and therefore, my content will be much more structured.
It also means that I won’t be able to split my posts up into series. As I post every 3 days, it could be 21 days before I’m back on a topic and as a result, I can’t really post series anymore. This means that I’ll have to write and publish posts all at once. It means my posts are going to be packed full of information.
I can publish other posts on days when I don’t have a scheduled post. Now if I want to post my monthly blog review, it has to be on a day when I don’t have to post an article in one of my categories.
I’m hoping that this restructuring and better organisation will really help to improve this blog. Eventually I want to start to promote it, but I’m just going to take my time. I’m going to make my product great, before I start to promote it!
By the way, the new blogging schedule is starting on Monday.
