Increasing traffic to my blog

Posted on July 8th, 2008.

I mentioned in my blog review for June that I wanted to increase the number of visitors coming to this blog. I’ve been thinking of ways to genrerate this traffic, and have decided to try a few well-known methods.

All of the methods I’ll be using to generate traffic will be free or cost less than $5 per day. So while that limits my options a bit, it’ll certainly be good for my bank balance.

Posting on forums

This method is an oldie, but it’s very useful. Although I won’t receive huge volumes of traffic, the traffic will be good quality. For example, users coming from one of my favourite forums view more than 2 pages on average more, than other visitors.

Not only will I get more visitors, but I’ll earn a better online reputation and learn a thing or two.

Commentating

This is another method which people have been using for a long time, and like forum posting, the volume of traffic won’t be huge. However it will be targeted traffic, and as a result, it will be valuable traffic.

Social media sites

This is probably one of the best methods of generating traffic because it’s free, and unlike the previous two, you can get huge volumes of traffic if you do it properly. I’ve never had much success with this method in the past, but I’m very willing to give it another go.

So far I’ve become a member of StumbleUpon (I’m a little late to the party), and Plurk. I’m also a member of Twitter, and have been for some time. However, I don’t tweet enough.

The methods I’ve mentioned above aren’t all about getting more visitors. I’ll be learning new things, and connecting with new people. I’m starting to build an online reputation.

So far this month, I’ve been posting an awful lot on my favourite forum, and I’ve been doing some Plurking. I’ve been taking note of the number of visitors I get from posting on forums, so I’ll have a nice report on forum posting to generate traffic in the near future. I’ll hopefully also be able to post a few tips and tricks for generating traffic from these methods soon.

hi! I like the simplicity of your blog design. your post reflect that state I am currently in with regards to my blog although I am still not joining any social media sites at the moment. If i may ask, how many hours do you work on your blog per day?

Thanks! I probably don’t do enough. Normally I’ll spend about an hour or so promoting my blog. That’s posting on forums, commentating, and doing a bit of social media work. Then on a day I need to write a post (every three days) I’ll spend about an hour to 2 researching and writing.
