I’ve taken the plunge - affiliate marketing

Posted on November 19th, 2008.

I have finally decided to try affiliate marketing, and I’m going to keep you all updated on my progress. I’ve never done anything like this before, so it (my mistakes) should make for interesting reading.

I’ve signed up for PPC Coach, and my first task is to set a goal. From Pragmatic Thinking and Learning: Refactor Your Wetware (Pragmatic Programmers) I’ve learnt that a good goal must be SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-boxed). Conforming to those 5 guidelines, I’ve come up with the following goal.

I want to make $40 profit per day from affiliate marketing by the end of February 2008.

So far, I have been doing an awful lot of reading, and studying. My main sources of information at the moment are PPC Coach, and UberCamp. Both have very active forums, though I’m yet to gain access to the forums on UberCamp as you have to pass their quiz first. I’ve also signed up for a few affiliate networks, and am getting the funds ready to try out my affiliate experiments.

So far, I’ve signed up to the following networks…

I know what you’re probably thinking, “he has too many things on his plate,” and that certainly is true. I rarely focus on anything for a long period of time, and as a result, I usually end up trying to do too many things at the same time. However, affiliate marketing gives me the chance to make some good money, and I think that’s a great incentive to help me focus. I want to put all of my other projects on hold, until I’ve at least tried affiliate marketing.

I know that it’s not going to be easy. I’m going to lose money as I make mistakes, but that’s a huge part of any learning process. I’m prepared to lose a few bucks. ;)

It’s all about learning as much as I can, and getting as much experience as I can. Pragmatic Thinking and Learning: Refactor Your Wetware (Pragmatic Programmers) is already showing it’s worth in that regard. I’m picking up lots of good methods to learn things. Methods which I hope to use to become a super affiliate. :)

Just getting started also, take a look at TAG, the affiliate god. I have been on the fence on whether I can make it as an Affiliate, time and resources. I have found the videos to be very informative and it helped reduced the reading time.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the welcome Wes.

Affiliate marketing really is tough, and it does take a lot of time, and money. Though I haven’t even run my first campaign yet, so I don’t know just how hard it is yet! I’m sure I’m in for a shock.
