May blog review and an update on my goals

Posted on June 6th, 2008.

I’m sort of back, well at least to post this update. I’m still pretty busy, so it’ll be another week or two until I’m truly ready to resume my normal posting schedule.

My monthly blog reviews are becoming a tradition, and I didn’t want to leave a month out, so I thought I’d write this post. May has been successful in terms of visitor numbers and rankings, but content-wise, it’s been terrible (but I only have myself to blame for that).

Visitors

aaronfalloon.com received 1,635 unique visitors in May, and 1,451 absolute unique visitors. I’m a little disappointed with the huge percentage of unique visitors who are also absolute unique visitors. It means that visitors rarely return more than once to view this blog. However, it’s probably because I haven’t updated in a while. Heck if this wasn’t my blog, and it remained without a useful update for this long, I wouldn’t return either.

The biggest sources of visitors were referring sites, which provided this site with 48.26% of its traffic. The top three referring sites were powerdropping.com, stumbleupon.com and entrecard.com. It’s good to see that like in April, my traffic is coming from sites which aren’t all EntreCard related.

Search engine traffic was down by 8 visitors to 32 visitors. Nevertheless, it is good to see the amount of traffic which I’m receiving from search engines, other than Google, is on the rise. The number coming from Google is down though, so it’s a two-steps-forward-and-one-step-back situation.

The bounce rate is still way to high at 91.87%, but that’s thanks to the high volume of EntreCard traffic.

Content

I can’t really say much about content. I didn’t produce that much of it in May! 2 posts for an entire month sucks, and is something which I’m definitely going to improve upon in June, and even further on in July.

The number of pageviews this month was 1,937 which indicates that people are viewing more than one post when they visit, which is good.

The top 3 posts in May were my posts on, content generators, how to speed up Firefox, and my interview with Jon Warass.

Miscellaneous

The number of backlinks increased again this month, probably thanks to the large StumbleUpon I got. The number of backlinks this site now has is 979. It’s good to see it increasing.

My website grade is also up to 81, which shows this blog is reclaiming some of its former glory before the downtime time during April.

My Technorati rank has plummeted from 927,370 in April, to 563,498 which is an incredible decrease, and something which I’m very happy with. However, my Alexa rank did rise to 187,334.

Lastly for this month, this blog finally got a PR of 2. I’m very pleased with that, as it means my hard work is actually paying off.

Blog improvements

I didn’t really install or change anything in May, and so there’s nothing really to say here.

I did install Kontera, but I’m not sure if you could call that an improvement. ;)

Plans for June

My plan for June is pretty simple - get back into a regular posting frequency. As I mentioned I’m still busy, so getting back on track could be a slow process.

Review of my goals

If you remember back to the start of the year, I posted four goals which I wanted to achieve by December 31st. I’ve made fantastic progress on some, and on others there’s been little progress made.

  1. My first goal was to make over $1000 from this blog in 2008. Now, I haven’t made much progress on this goal at all, but I have now installed Kontera and Google ads, so I’m hoping to achieve this goal by the year’s end.
  2. My next goal was to receive over 100 unique visitors per week, and that has definitely been achieved. This blog’s averaging over 200 unique visitors per week. Not bad, but I’d like to increase it even further.
  3. My third goal was to make contacts online, and I’ve been sort of doing that. I know I’ve definitely found a wonderful contact in Vincent Tan from polymathprogrammer.com, and so I guess you could say I’ve achieved that goal. In part anyway, I’d need to make a few more contacts if I want to truly achieve this goal!
  4. My last goal was to get to know a programming language. I know my way around Ruby, but I haven’t been able to do anything which I want to do with it yet, so I’ve still got a lot of learning to do. However I have been looking into PHP lately, and so I might give it a little go before deciding to press on with learning Ruby.

May was a good month, but as always I want this blog to do even better in June. I want to get everything back on track, and help this blog grow even further. Traffic has been lagging of late, and it’s time to get that sorted.

I like the information your giving here. It’s valuable and also timeless.
I’d in the process of doing something similar and have goals similar to yours. I too
am trying to start my journey to financial freedom. Any tips for me? Thanks

Thanks for the support Chris!

I guess my biggest tip is to just keep trying. I know it’s a cliché, but it’s sound advice. I’ve had many ventures which have failed, some of them didn’t even get of the ground. However one day, I’m bound to create a project which will be a success.
