My Online Goals for 2008

Posted on January 21st, 2008.

I know, I know, I’m a little late (a bad start perhaps?). After all, 2008 started 18 days ago, but I procrastinate. I have 5 goals, and they’re all internet related.

Firstly, by the end of 2008 I want to have made over $1000 from this blog. It’s a straightforward goal, but earning the money isn’t going to be easy. I don’t mind how it’s done - as long as it’s legal and honest, I’ll be happy.

My next goal is also for this blog. I want this blog to average 100 unique visitors per week, and not all through advertising. I’d like to rank high in the search engines for a few keywords.

My third goal is to make contacts and friends online. I’ll probably accomplish that via this blog.

I’d also like to create one other website which will earn me a daily income. I don’t care how small that income is, as long as I have another website which makes some money, I will have achieved this goal.

My final goal is probably the nerdiest of all, learn a programming language. I know it’s impossible to learn a complete language in only a year, but that’s not what I want to do. I want to be competent in, not a master of Ruby (the language I’ve chosen). I’ve already begun to work on this goal.

Some of my goals I’ve already started to work on, others I’ll maybe only get round to in the summer. It all depends on how busy my offline life is. Only time will tell…

You should be able to get 100 uniques a day with a consistent posting schedule.

I try to make one post each day. If you’re starving for post ideas a good tip is to find a tech support problem and post the solution.

Posts like that get decent search engine traffic.

Thanks for the tips Link. I hope to post once every three days. I just hope that I can find things to write about and the time to write about them.

Good luck with your goals Aaron, I’m sure obtaining 100 uniques a day will be quite easy for ya. :)

Hey Aaron,

Good tips from Link. I’ve found some of my highest trafficked posts come from those that solve a programming problem, though the numbered list posts are great for reaching a lot of sites - people can’t help but like them ;) Have a look at copyblogger.com’s tips on writing for social media, lots of good ideas there.

As a web dev, writing a scandalous post on a particular language/IDE/framework etc is a sure way to get traffic, even if you do start a flame war. Things like “why PHP will never gain traction as an enterprise language”, “why all your business logic should be in Javascript” are great for sites like dzone.com, programming.reddit.com, etc.

Hope that all helps, and good luck for the future! Us web developing aspiring entrepreneurs gotta help each other out :)
