I've found some of my highest trafficked posts come from those that solve a programming problem, though the numbered list posts are great for reaching a lot of sites - people can't help but like them ;) Have a look at copyblogger.com's tips on writing for social media, lots of good ideas there. As a web dev, writing a scandalous post on a particular language/IDE/framework etc is a sure way to get traffic, even if you do start a flame war. Things like "why PHP will never gain traction as an enterprise language", "why all your business logic should be in Javascript" are great for sites like dzone.com, programming.reddit.com, etc. Hope that all helps, and good luck for the future! I try to make one post each day. If you're starving for post ideas a good tip is to find a tech support problem and post the solution. Posts like that get decent search engine traffic.
